About UCDS All Stars Season

We aim to establish a fair selection procedure for the All Star teams representing UCDS in the upcoming end-of-season tournaments. The All Stars program enhances advanced skills, cultivates a competitive mindset, and promotes a winning attitude. Please note that the All-Stars program is separate from the recreational season and may not be suitable for all players and families.

SCHEDULE:

The All-Star season starts immediately after the spring recreational season ends. Practices are usually two to three times a week, with a weekend tournament, from mid-May through late June.

But the journey doesn't end there! Occasionally, exceptional teams secure a spot in the regional tournament, scheduled for mid-July. Players must fully commit to the practice and tournament season to be part of this thrilling ride.

See the anticipated 2024 Tournament Calendar schedule below for those eager to plan!

TEAMS:

We typically have three divisions: 8U, 10U, and 12U. Each team usually consists of 12-15 players.

Making the team does not guarantee playing time. All Stars is very competitive, and each manager and their coaching staff will determine which players will best help the team succeed. Some teams may carry as many as 15 players, and not every player will play in every game. Some teams may have an alternate player(s) that may or may not be called upon to practice (in preparation for a tournament(s)) and/or to play in a game (s) in the event a player(s) on the team is unable to participate in a particular tournament(s). Some players may be utilized only as pinch runners, pinch hitters, or as defensive replacements. However, the opportunity to practice at this level and experience tournament play will make all players better. Each player can earn that starting position by playing well, practicing hard, and having a great attitude.

MANAGERS:

The managers for the All Star game will be selected through an application, voting, and selection process as outlined in the UCDS league rules. The rules can be found in the league rules under "Resources" below.

PLAYERS:

The UCDS league rules describe the process of selecting the All Star players for each team. It involves evaluations from the manager and coach of the recreational season as well as scheduled assessments. These assessments allow managers and coaches to see players as they hit, field, throw, and run. There are also specialty assessments for the pitcher and catcher positions.

Assessments are usually scheduled for early May at Standley Fisher (Major) Field.

ELIGIBILITY:

Every player is eligible to be an All Star within their age-appropriate division, unless they are not age-eligible for the division. Before the player evaluation process begins, each player must declare her availability and desire to participate in All Stars. If playing in multiple leagues, each player must declare which league they want to play for. All potential All Star players must meet league and USA Softball requirements for the number of games played to be eligible for consideration as an All Star player. (UCDS League Rules, ARTICLE 8, SECTION D)

Additional Important Information:

  • The player must be registered for the 2024 Spring Recreation Season

  • The player must have played in at least 75% of the Spring Ball season

  • The player can 'play up' an age division but cannot 'play down' a division*

  • After March 31st, players cannot play on any travel ball team or other non-USA Softball team during the All-Star season. Players also on travel ball teams must decide whether to play All-Stars and stop travel ball or not play All-Stars and declare their decision to the Player Agent.

*USA Softball All Star Player Eligibility guidelines state "A player who played in a higher Age Classification during the current season is eligible to play in their proper Age Classification." Players previously assessed and approved to "play up" are able to tryout for the higher Age Classification team per Classification per Section 5.4 (Team Formation). If a player does not get selected for the higher age team they are still eligible for their natural age division team. (UCDS League Rules, ARTICLE 8, SECTION 8.2 GENERAL)

COST:

All-Stars is a separate fee. The fee covers various expenses such as tournament entry fees, uniforms, USA Softball fees, and more. The cost for the season will be an average of $400-$500 per player. Please note that this fee does not cover the cost of lodging for any travel tournaments. However, we offer payment plans and financial assistance upon request.

Our league participates in a single tournament every season, called a 'getaway.' We will play in the San Clemente Memorial Day tournament. Families can stay at pre-reserved rooms in Dana Point at a negotiated price, which will require an additional cost.

If any team qualifies for the state tournament during the district playoffs, rooms are booked in Lancaster, CA, in late June, which is an additional cost.

All Stars fee must be received within three (3) days of team announcements. Should the cost of the All-Stars be a concern, please contact our Player Agent at playeragent@ucdelsol.com

Commitment:

UCDS All Star teams will participate in several tournaments, starting the first weekend of May and ending the last weekend of June. These tournaments usually occur on Friday evenings (sometimes Thursday evenings), all day Saturday, and Sunday. Most tournaments have pool play on Saturday, with elimination play starting on Sunday.

The district playoffs are scheduled to begin in Santee in mid-June. If any of our teams qualify, they will advance to the State playoffs in Lancaster, CA, which will take place in late June. If any of our teams qualify in the State playoffs, they will proceed to the Regional playoffs hosted in San Diego, which are scheduled for a weekend in mid-July.

We hold a fundraising tournament called "Tournament Del Sol" every May to support our league's yearly operations. Our All Star families host the tournament, and we require parent volunteers to help with field preparation, snack bar, hospitality table, trash pickup, and other tasks. Each family is expected to contribute six hours of volunteer time for this event, or they can choose to buy out for $250. We greatly appreciate your help in making this tournament successful while showcasing our league, fields, and hospitality.

All Stars fee must be received within three (3) days of team announcements. Should the cost of the All-Stars be a concern, please contact our Player Agent at playeragent@ucdelsol.com
